I was on some news program a few weeks ago talking about Barack Obama's YouTube videos and Hillary's online live chats, and at the end of the segment I said that the Internet empowers Regular-Joe candidates by giving them free access to a huge chunk of potential voters. The thing is, Obama and Hillary have tons of cash to run "real" political campaigns with slick TV spots and so on. They're taking the free route not to save cash but to reach YOU instead of the oldsters who watch the nightly news. If you're online, you're engaged, and politicians dig that.

Step 2: Keep a blog, but make it good. Link-baity lists like "17 Reasons to Enforce Anti-Spam Legislation" are good; "10 Reasons Mac Users Should Vote for Me" is better. Make sure you have a credible (yet hip) blogroll. And use ClipMarks to post snippets and ideas from around the Web and other blogs, to show that you can both talk and listen.

Chavez seizes foreign oil projects

CARACAS, Venezuela - President Hugo Chavez ordered by decree on Monday the takeover of oil projects run by foreign oil companies in Venezuela's Orinoco River region.

He said Monday that has decreed a law to proceed with the nationalizations that will see state oil company Petroleos de Venezuela SA, or PDVSA, taking at least a 60 percent stake in the projects.

By May 1, "we will occupy these fields" and have the national flag flying on them, he said.

Chavez did not detail how the government will pay for its increased share in the projects in which the companies are estimated to have invested some $17 billion.

Private companies pumping oil elsewhere in Venezuela submitted to state-controlled joint ventures last year, and few resisted because they were reluctant to abandon Venezuela, which has the largest oil deposits outside of the Middle East.

In general, I think you are confusing 'coders' with 'engineers'. In my personal terminology, there's a gaping void that separates the two. 'Coders' are exactly what you describe - nothing more than a commodity. I can hire temporary coders from anywhere in the world to churn out mindless classes and programs. 'Engineering' is a completely different thing to me. Being able to do a little problem analysis, business-case analysis, a little design and architecture and then applying that to a domain-specific solution in the form of software is an art and should never be viewed as anything other than prestigious. Remember that the root of the engineer is 'genius'.

`Star Wars' droid R2-D2 to collect mail

WASHINGTON - Thirty years ago, in theaters near and far, far away, a movie opened the imaginations of millions, combining the magic of mythology and special effects to launch the "Star Wars" phenomenon.

A star of those films — the brave little robot R2-D2 — is about to take a turn collecting mail as the Postal Service and Lucasfilm Ltd. commemorate that movie launch.

The post office is wrapping mail collection boxes in some 200 cities nationwide in a special covering to look like R2-D2.

It's part of a promotion for a new stamp to be announced March 28, said Anita T. Bizzotto, the post office's chief marketing officer.

Carol Bunett sues"Family Guy"

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Comedian Carol Burnett has filed a copyright infringement suit against the makers of Fox TV's cartoon sitcom "Family Guy" over an episode poking fun at the performer and her variety show from the 1960s and '70s.

The suit, which seeks at least $2 million in damages, also says the cartoon episode used a "slightly altered version" of the copyrighted musical theme to "The Carol Burnett Show" without permission from the 73-year-old entertainer.

A spokesman for 20th Century Fox Television, which produces "Family Guy," said on Friday the suit was without merit and that references to Burnett and her show in an 18-second sequence of the cartoon amounted to parody.
